In the most popular English version of the tale of St. George, a dragon was terrorizing a town in Libya. The townsfolk had to offer sheep to appease it, and when they ran out of sheep, they began sacrificing young maidens. St. George arrived just as the princess was about to be sacrificed, and he fought and killed the dragon, saving her life.
The obverse design of the 2024 British Gold St. George and the Dragon Coin features a bust of His Majesty King Charles III. In this design by Martin Jennings from 2022, His Majesty is shown in left-profile relief, without a crown on his head.
The reverse of the 2024 1 oz Gold St. George and the Dragon Coin shows a modern image of the famous hero on horseback. In this design, St. George rides over a dragon and slays the beast with his spear, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
These features are also available on the quarter-ounce in fine gold.
